A warm welcome is assured for Wolsey Lodge B&B guests at this former village school at Thornton, where John and Maureen Burton have established an excellent reputation for their hospitality and comfortable home. Set in beautiful countryside just a few miles from historic Berwick-upon-Tweed, this lovely country B&B is an ideal base for exploring the Scottish Borders.
The house itself has been sympathetically converted from school to home, retaining many of the original features and furnished in a classic country style with antiques. A lovely walled garden gives an element of seclusion and there is a delightful outlook over the established trees and shrubs and mature vegetable garden.
The peaceful B&B guest rooms have tea/coffee making facilities, television and en suite or private bathrooms. On arrival, Wolsey Lodge guests are offered tea and Aga-baked homemade scones in front of a log fire in the drawing room or, in warmer months, in the spacious conservatory.
Breakfasts are ‘top class’ with fresh fruit, organic eggs and kippers or smoked haddock being a particular speciality.
Your B&B Hosts
John and Maureen have been in the farming and hospitality industry for many years both in Norfolk and Northumberland. Both are very musical – John is the organist at Berwick Parish Church and Maureen a chorister. They are pleased to recommend local hostelries (an excellent pub is two miles away) and restaurants in the area.
Berwick-upon-Tweed, just 3 miles away, is England’s most northerly town and is midway between Edinburgh and Newcastle. It is the perfect stopover point for travellers taking the East Coast route. But there is so much to do it is worth staying longer. The area is close to the Northumberland National Park and steeped in history. Art galleries, stately homes, museums, walks, cycling routes abound. Wildlife enthusiasts are ideally placed for visiting the Farne Islands and of course Bamburgh and Lindisfarne Castles.
