Caradoc Court No. 42 (5944)
As one of the oldest Wolsey Lodge houses, Caradoc Court was originally built in 1630, although artefacts found under the ballroom offer evidence that a Roman building may once have stood on the site. A devastating fire in 1986 marked the beginning of an extensive renovation project to restore the Jacobean mansion and today it is a sumptuous, graceful, luxury and comfortable retreat open to bed and breakfast (B&B) guests and home to hosts John and Kathy Handby.

The galleried ‘Great Hall’ leads you into the house and a welcoming tea awaits Wolsey Lodge B&B guests' arrival before you are invited to explore the comfortable sitting rooms, billiards room, the conservatory with its wrought iron beams, the extensive library and panelled ballroom. Upstairs there are four en suite guest rooms that have been carefully and thoughtfully furnished with everything you would expect of a Wolsey Lodge and all take advantage of the views of the Wye valley, river and of course the beautiful gardens.

Outside there is just as much to explore and enjoy including the rose garden, meandering paths around the pond as well as a walk through the woods and meadows to an idyllic spot by the Wye where the only sound is fish leaping from the water.

Your Hosts
John and Kathy Handby arrived at Caradoc Court in 2009 and immediately set to remedying the neglected gardens. John is an enthusiastic historian whilst Kathy’s passions for cooking and looking after her B&B guests ensure they’ll want to return to the pretty area of Ross-on-Wye in Herefordshire.

The Location
The Wye Valley is simply beautiful. The river is easily explored and fishing, canoeing, walking and cycling can all be enjoyed when you stay at Caradoc Court which is just outside Ross-on-Wye in the village of Sellack, Herefordshire. Pretty villages and towns such as Ross and Hay-on-Wye offer shops aplenty whilst the larger cathedral cities of Hereford, home to the Mapa Mundi and chained library, and Gloucester, with its historic docks, are both within easy reach.

An impressive house, beautifully restored. Our room and bathroom were large, tastefully decorated and immaculate. Breakfast was superb. The owners made us most welcome.
