With uninterrupted views across to Ely Cathedral and steeped in history, The Old Hall is a restored Jacobean manor house that was once home to Cromwell’s mother and which today offers a luxury B&B retreat for visitors to the Fens. The house and surrounding estate have been in the Morbey family since 1860 and your hosts Alison and Anthony started their renovations in 1999 on the footprint of the original manor house. Today the house’s Jacobean heritage is artfully blended with modern luxury furnishings and décor that Wolsey Lodges guests will truly appreciate.

The warm and comfortable guest bedrooms, one with a super king size bed, are furnished with antiques and hand made furniture, fine linen and a tea tray laid with delicious homemade treats. Large en suite bathrooms have splendidly decadent baths as well as separate power showers and Molton Brown toiletries – a real delight. Each room overlooks the gardens to the front or back of the house and guests exploring the grounds will discover a network of walks around the formal garden and ornamental lakes. Further on the estate is the family’s shire horse stud.

Alison and Anthony have poured themselves into the renovations of The Old Hall and the work continues in the gardens where Alison is often found busily planning and planting. Anthony is a farmer, a keen shot and fisherman and enjoys bridge.

The Location

Ely is just one mile away, offering an excellent variety of restaurants and pubs for evening meals. The Cathedral, Wicken Fen Nature Reserve, Oliver Cromwell's House, Anglesey Abbey, Wimpole Hall and Welney Wetland Reserve are all close by. Newmarket and the National Stud for racing enthusiasts, Duxford Museum, Cambridge colleges and fantastic walking countryside complete the picture for a visit to The Old Hall near Ely.

How to find The Old Hall Bed & Breakfast (B&B).

A142 One mile south of Ely, go past first sign into Stuntney village, the house is on the left hand side on a hill. Entrance is approximately 300 metres further on, with wooden lattice gates set back from road. From Newmarket approach via A142, past southern entrance to Stuntney village and house is 300 metres on right.
