Situated on the edge of the pretty black and white village of Dilwyn, The Great House bowls guests over with its beauty, comfort and quiet splendour. Given that Charles II is reputed to have danced on the landing, it is perhaps not surprising that guests are offered a welcome fit for a king! The older part of the house dates to 1550.

The flag-stoned hall with its huge fireplace, beams and panelling opens on to a galleried oak staircase hung with family portraits. The house is furnished throughout with sumptuous fabrics, antiques and paintings. Guests have their own elegant sitting room and the bedrooms overlook the garden, open under the National Gardens Scheme. Visitors are welcome to enjoy the yew walk, rose garden and intricate knot garden.

Tom used to teach at a local prep school and Jane is closely involved with local charity work. Both are deeply committed to the house and garden as well as looking after the four Pekingneses. Locally produced food is used for breakfasts and dinner.

The Location

Hay-on-Wye, famous for books and its annual literary Festival is close by and Ludlow has an ancient castle, markets and Michelin starred restaurants. Antique shops, National Trust properties and wonderful gardens abound. Hereford has a great cathedral, ancient chained library and the Mappa Mundi. Several good golf courses are within easy reach.

How to find The Great House Bed & Breakfast (B&B).

From Hereford: Take A4110 north for approximatly 9 miles. Turn left to Dilwyn. (Ignore sign to Little Dilwyn). At village green bear left. The Great House is on the right with tall wrought iron gates.

From Leominster: Take A44 (signed Brecon) for approximately 5 miles. Turn left into village. Go round three sharp bends. The Great House is on the right hand side.
