Barton House lies at the heart of a glorious village in the North Cotswolds, well known to Shakespeare and only 17 miles south of Stratford-upon-Avon. This Elizabethan manor house, extensively redesigned by Inigo Jones in 1636, stands majestically opposite the village green beside the 12th century parish Church.

A marvellous sense of taste prevails in the quietly elegant interior. Antique furnishings and oriental rugs and carpets grace the oak panelled sitting and dining rooms which guests are welcome to use.

Beautifully appointed bedrooms with en suite bathrooms are furnished in a subtle oriental style and enjoy stunning views over lawns and fountains to the Cotswold countryside.

Cyclamen, magnolias and rhododendrons in spring, and maples, tulip trees and acers in autumn, create colourful accents all year round. A Japanese garden, secret garden, rose garden, tennis court and croquet lawn also make up the glorious grounds - as does a vineyard. 2002 was a good year, 2005 was sensational!

Hamish Cathie founded, and for 25 years ran, Britain's premier incoming tour operation and retired in 1996 to take over the family estates which run to some 1200 acres. He is a passionate gardener. Gillian is a brilliant cook and has a special talent for making guests feel most welcome in this tranquil home.

The Location

The North Cotswolds are home to Kiftsgate and Hidcote, two of Britains most sensational gardens. Stratford-upon-Avon and Warwick are a short drive north. Oxford lies half an hour to the east and Cheltenham the same to the west. The Royal Cotswolds from Cirencester to Badminton are also less than an hour.

Barton House is opposite the village green of Barton-on-the-Heath. From Oxford take the A3400 north via Woodstock towards Stratford-upon-Avon. After some 23 miles turn left in the village of Long Compton by the church at the sign marked 'Barton 2½ miles'.
