Bradford-on-Avon straddles the river on the southern edge of the Cotswold Hills, and Priory Steps, originally a terrace of six weavers cottages, enjoys stunning views over the beautiful historic townscape.

Old leather sofas nestle in the library, perfect for a relaxing pre-dinner drink. The dining room, with crackling log fire on chilly evenings, has a door onto the exquisite terraced garden, filled with fragrant roses, clematis and passion flowers clambering over wonderful old Cotswold stone walls.

This light, spacious home was purchased from the world record breaking aviatrix and motor racer, The Hon Mrs Victor Bruce - the first lady to win the Monte Carlo Rally Coupe Des Dames in 1928 and the first Englishwoman to fly solo around the world. Fascinating memorabilia relating to her exploits are displayed in the house.

Five comfortably furnished bedrooms, including ‘Mrs Bruce's' with its own sitting room, have their own bathrooms. Priory Steps is perfect for large groups and house parties.

Carey and Diana have been welcoming Wolsey Lodge guests to their home since 1987. Diana is a expertly trained cook and one of her catering jobs included a cricket season cooking for the committee and VIPs at the Oval! Carey, a keen local historian and former Chair of the Town and District tourist associations, will happily advise on the best places to visit.

The Location

With an ancient Saxon chapel, splendid Norman church, 14th century town bridge with lock-up and Tithe Barn, the town is a living history of architecture. It is also central for visiting Bath, Longleat, Lacock Abbey, Castle Combe, the beautiful gardens at Stourhead, Stonehenge, Avebury, and the beautiful Cotswolds.

How to find Priory Steps Bed & Breakfast (B&B).

Bradford-on-Avon is on the A363, 8 miles south east of Bath, 2 miles north of Trowbridge. Take the first left, towards Bath, just north of Bradford town bridge. Turn left, signed to Turleigh, by thatched cottage. Priory Steps is 100 yards down on the left.
