The Wilderness
Lodge No 70
Guests can lose themselves in the charm of The Wilderness - an imposing limestone country house, with short gabled wings, mullioned windows with hoodmoulds (as described in Pevsner's ‘The Buildings of England') and surrounded by enchanting grounds.
From the stone-flagged entrance hall and inviting pale blue drawing room, to the bright dining room with high ceiling and huge windows - rooms are beautifully decorated in quintessential country house style. The elegant Rose bedroom and the fresh, floral Yellow bedroom with huge French armoire, both have super king size beds and private bathrooms. Guests can wander along pergola walkways with scented rose filled borders either side, to discover a croquet lawn, a peaceful orchard and an ancient folly. The garden is a haven for birds with woodpeckers pottering and swooping throughout the day.
Your Bed & Breakfast Hosts
Peter and Tarn are experienced and gracious hosts. Peter is an arable farmer, his love of the countryside spilling over into the developing garden. Tarn, who used to run financial courses for women, also loves gardening and playing bridge. She is an enthusiastic hostess who loves making her guests feel at home and believes Rutland's own motto ‘Multum in Parvo' - much in little, applies here.
The Location
Dozens of mellow stone villages punctuate the rolling landscape of this undiscovered countryside, while at the county's heart is Rutland Water - the biggest man-made lake in Europe. Magnificent Burghley House sits in splendour above the old town of Stamford close by, home to fine antique shops, restaurants and pubs, while Belvoir, Grimsthorpe and Rockingham Castles and the triumph of Peterborough Cathedral all lie within half an hour.
