Hidden along a winding driveway, discovering Hartforth Mill is a true delight. The babbling stream that once fed this ancient granary mill now flows gently alongside this beautifully restored house that is home to Tim and Phillippa May. Step inside to high vaulted ceilings, large spacious rooms, open wood fires and above all else, a great sense of homely comfort.

Relax in the expansive kitchen or cosy sitting room, pass a few hours in the billiard room or perhaps take a few lazy lengths of the outdoor pool with its sunny and secluded terrace – this is a home in which to take your time and simply enjoy the seclusion of your surroundings. The bedrooms are simply furnished and benefit from being located in a private area of the house which would be perfect for a group of family or friends staying together.

Outside the Mill is bordered by a stream on both sides and the original mill race, all intermingled with formal and informal garden areas designed by Phillippa and lovingly created over their ten years here.

Your Bed & Breakfast Hosts

Phillippa is now a garden designer but spent many years travelling and was previously a fashion designer with her own business in London - influences which all come to bear in the furnishings of their home. Tim is a businessman and owns a marble and granite company in nearby Durham. Both enjoy art and travel and, when time allows, a round of golf at one of the many courses nearby.

The Location

This is a wonderful corner of North Yorkshire – peaceful and remote whilst providing much for visitors to see and do. As well as the Moors there is High Force and Aysgarth Falls, the Otter Trust, the World Heritage Site of Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Water Gardens.

How to find Hartforth Mill Bed & Breakfast (B&B).

Hartforth Mill is located 7 minutes from Scotch Corner. From Scotch Corner take A66 West towards Penrith. After 2 miles take first left to Gilling West. Turn right at bottom of hill. After a half mile turn left signed Hartforth and Whashton. After exactle one mile turn left signed Whashton. After exactly half a mile drive is on the left, (10 yards before entrance on the right, is a sign 'Hartforth Hill'). Follow track to end, approx 400 yards, you have arrived.
