A tree lined drive across parkland takes you to Spital Hill where tea and home made shortbread await, setting the scene for your stay - beautiful food and warm hospitality in peaceful rooms with antique furniture.

Comfortable bedrooms and spacious bathrooms that include quality bath essences and towels, are all individually styled and one of them even has a Bechstein piano, which guests are encouraged to play. All enjoy views across the Vale of York, a quilted pattern of fields, copses and farmhouses.

Food is a hobby here, where all bread is hand homemade and delights such as roasted figs in pancetta with raspberry vinaigrette dressed salad; noisettes of lamb on a garlicky potato sauce or Ann's own ice cream with Pedro Ximinez dessert sherry are on the menu, followed by leaf teas, infusions and coffee with home made fudge.

The garden ranges from formal with fountain to natural with waterfall. There is also a croquet lawn with mallets and balls available for those determined to fall out with each other!

The Location

Spital Hill is only 9 minutes from the A1 and is the perfect stopover for people on north/south journeys. Thirsk is the birthplace of Thomas Lord who gave his name to Lord's Cricket Ground and home to James Herriott, who used to treat our animals. The ruined abbeys of Byland, Fountains and Rievaulx are close by and Harrogate, York, Whitby and Scarborough are pleasant drives.
