With Windmill House sitting quietly on a hill surrounded with wild riverside gardens, sloping gently away to a lush river valley and waterfall, you would be forgiven for thinking that you were in the heart of the countryside, miles from anywhere. But you are actually just a mile, as the crow flies, from the city centre, next door to the National Gallery of Modern Art in Edinburgh.

This surprising, three storey Georgian style house welcomes guests into a pillared entrance hall with a galleried staircase. The elegant yet cosy drawing room and dining rooms both have open fires and a lovely terrace offers incredible views.

The ultra spacious and inviting guest rooms have deeply comfortable beds promising a blissful night's sleep and easy chairs to relax in. Lovely finishing touches include colour television and video and quality soaps and bath essences together with large fluffy white towels in the luxury en suite with bath and power shower.

The eponymous old stone windmill sits in the two acre garden, which is home to ducks, swans and badgers, who come to be fed every night.

Michael is a builder specialising in Georgian and Victorian restoration as well as new houses and Vivien is an interior designer. They are interesting, charming and gregarious hosts and have created a beautiful home which they enjoy sharing with guests.

The Location

Edinburgh is a cosmopolitan city with a world famous festival, museums, galleries, excellent shopping, many restaurants, bars and cafes literally on the doorstep. Paths lead through the garden to a bridge then onto a riverside walk into the city.

How to find Windmill House Bed & Breakfast (B&B).

Situated 1 mile west of Princes Street. From Murrayfield Avenue turn into Coltbridge Avenue then into Coltbridge Gardens. At the end of Coltbridge Gardens fork left up hill on private drive then fork left through stone gate pillars signed Windmill House.
