Blackmore Farm

Domesday Manor in the Quantock Hills

History comes to life in this 14th century manor house, with parts dating back to 1486. Original features include medieval garderobes, mullioned windows, stone archways and massive open fireplaces. Decorative touches match the period, with suits of armour, tapestries and local artefacts. At the foot of the Quantocks, this is a working farm in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with nature all around.

Guest accommodation is of the highest standard. All guest rooms are en-suite and some have walk-in wet rooms, beds are super-comfortable and linens fine. Bedrooms are available in the house itself, with further options including a shepherd's hut on wheels and two converted barns, which means you can add kitchen facilities to the options provided.

There's a comfortable guest sitting room with an open fire where you'll find plenty of information about the area, while guests in the converted Cider Press or Wagon House will have further living rooms of their own. It's just as well there are so many guest bedrooms, as the (organic and delicious) breakfasts are served in the baronial Great Hall, with a 20-foot oak table to fill.

Your B&B Hosts

Blackmore Farm has always been Ian's family home, and now their children have grown up he and Ann Dyer run the B&B accommodation, along with a home-made ice cream business, cafe and farm shop. Ian's brother still runs the family farm, with 850 acres and 200 cows, which serves to keep the food miles down.

The farm is set five miles west of Bridgwater right next to the Quantock Hills AONB. It's easily reached from the M5, so a great place to stop on the way down to Cornwall, but the area is worth exploring in its own right. There are caves at Cheddar and Wookey Hole, a castle at Dunster and countless gardens, abbeys and museums in the area. Alternatively there are plenty of walks across the Quantocks, Exmoor National Park and the South West Coastal Path, ideal ways to explore before stopping off at the Farm Shop for tea and cake.
