Broadgate House

A Georgian gem in Wordsworth country

Set in two acres of landscaped gardens and with sweeping views over the Duddon Estuary, Broadgate House is a grand family mansion in the heart of the Lake District. The common areas are positively baronial, with a Baroque drawing room with a black marble fireplace, and a dining room seating 14 with ease. If that's too formal there's also a charming breakfast room and a cosy guest sitting room with a wood-burning stove. It can be grand or intimate to suit your taste.

The guest bedrooms are full of character, with period wall-coverings and antique furnishings. Broadgate House has three guest bedrooms, two doubles and a single, beautifully decked out with crisp linens and comfortable mattresses. As befitting such a traditional mansion the bathrooms are not en-suite but are private, palatial spaces with free-standing baths and glorious views.

The grounds at Broadgate House are an integral part of this magnificent lodge's appeal.  The two acres are divided into a series of 'garden rooms', including an expansive walled garden, a croquet lawn and several terraces, all with sweeping views of the mountainous landscape and the sea below.

Your B&B Hosts

Broadgate House has been in the Lewthwaite family since built in 1814, at about the time Wordsworth was strolling by, But has since been modernised to the very highest standards. The current owner, Lady Diana Lewthwaite, is a charming and hospitable host. Guests are welcomed with scones and tea, while the breakfast sausages, locally reared on Cumbrian fields, are something of a speciality. Dinners, by arrangement, are a highlight, with the clink of crystal quiet in flickering candlelight.

Broadgate House is a perfect base for exploring the Lake District. Swinside Stone Circle is a short walk from the house, while for the active Scafell and Coniston Old Man are outstanding moountains close by. Drive two miles to the sea and you can ride Cumbria Heavy Horses on the beach or swim in waters warmed by the Gulf Stream, while you can also take a dip in the River Duddon and the lakes of Coniston, Wastwater or Windermere. There are castles aplenty, Beatrix Potter's house, and, of course, the daffodils that inspired the poems of Wordsworth.
