Catwell House

Perfect for walks in Exmoor and the Quantocks

Catwell House is a beautiful Somerset manor house with a documented history going back to 1646, but you'd hardly know this from the very contemporary comforts inside. Beds are super-comfortable, there's space to swing a full-sized billiard table and of course it's now got superfast wifi throughout.

It's the hosts that make a perfect B&B though and it's Rebecca and Ross that make this place special. Their languid charm makes everyone feel at home and they go to enormous lengths to make their guests comfortable.

Catwell House is in great walking country. Exmoor is one of the UK's most spectacular National Parks and is just to the West, the Quantocks Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty starts at the door, and miles of unspoiled coastline are within ten minutes drive.

There are five guest bedrooms here, available in a variety of useful configurations, including four-poster doubles, superkings and twin-bedded rooms, as well as a family suite comprising one double and a twin room that share a private bathroom (children aged from 10-18 are welcome). All fitted with Egyptian cotton sheets and Savana Raner Mitre bath sheets and towels and have full en-suite facilities, including baths and separate showers. For those who prefer to avoid stairs one of the guest suites is on the ground floor with easy access to the garden and can be either superking or twin.

For a property that dates back to the 17th century Catwell House is certainly spacious. Guests have their own dining room with space to seat 14, a large sitting room with an open fire that is lit whenever needed, and a billiard room with a full-sized table. The gardens are a delight, very sheltered and sunny and with views of the Quantocks, walled for privacy and leading down to a stream.

Had a really lovely two night stay. Ross and Rebecca were very warm, relaxed and welcoming. It's probably the best B&B we've stayed in. The room was beautiful and thoughtfully set up for a relaxing stay.

Your B&B Hosts

Your hosts here are Ross and Rebecca James. Ross cooks the breakfasts that are served in the dining room and his scrambled eggs and salmon is often singled out for praise. Although they don't currently offer evening meals they're thinking about it and might just need some encouragement. Catwell House is not licensed but happily supplies corkscrews, cooling jackets, decanters and wine glasses when required. They share the house with two Jack Russel dogs, Lottie and Humphrey. Feel free to join them on their daily walk! Dogs are welcome provided their owners are well-behaved.

Catwell House is in a woodland setting at the end of a private drive. Footpaths lead from the property to the Quantock Hills. It's a five-minute level walk to Williton Village, with shops, pubs and restaurants. The West Somerset Railway has a station in Williton and steam trains pass Catwell House's garden. Exmoor National Park and the coast at Watchet are ten minutes away by car. For walkers the Macmillan Way passes right by Catwell House, while the Coleridge Way and the South West Coast Path are both within easy reach.
