Chapel House

An angler's delight in Nether Wallop

This former Baptist chapel has been beautifully transformed into a sanctuary for the soul. Set amongst the quintessentially English chalk streams of the region, it comes with access to a beat on the River Test - perfect for anglers in search of trout.

The chapel itself was built in 1841, and lends its soaring vaulted ceilings to the airy and elegant sitting room and dining area. The guest rooms are off this, and beautifully furnished with luxurious en-suite bathrooms. It's a superb place to explore the borderland areas where Hampshire meets Wiltshire.

There are just two guest bedrooms here, both with superking beds and en-suite bathrooms. Linens are crisp, the rooms light and airy, and all in all they are superbly comfortable places to be.

Guests here are encouraged to relax in the glorious sitting room, with its soaring roof and radiant clear-glass windows. When the weather is kind there is also a sun terrace in the pretty walled garden.

Your B&B Hosts

Peter and Jane Mantle have a wealth of experience in both hospitality and angling. For 25 years they ran Delphi Lodge in the West of Ireland, a boutique property that hosted many celebrated guests, and they also built and ran the Delphi Club in Abaco, a plantation-style property at the heart of the Caribbean's prime fly-fishing waters. Jane is an accomplished cook though her skills usually only show at breakfast: this part of the country is thick with gastro-pubs so evening meals are not usually required.

Nether Wallop is in the heart of rural England's prime chalk streams, clear-water rivers unique in Europe and the wider world. They're superb for anglers. Peter co-owns a beat on the River Test near Romsey, about a 25-minute drive from Chapel House, and many guests come specifically to fish this or another river in the area. There's plenty more to see and do: Chapel House is perfectly placed for visits to Stonehenge, Avebury, and Salisbury's great cathedral.
