Glencoe House

Live like a laird in the heart of the Highlands at Scotland's ultimate country-house hotel

This fantastic property was built for Lord Strathcona and its aristocratic roots give it an irresistible period charm. There's nothing dated about the indoor comforts: each of the exceptional suites is furnished to the very highest standard, baths are invariably free-standing and linens crisp and fresh. Add in the very finest contemporary cuisine, views of Loch Leven and a dash of Highland charm and you've found the perfect recipe for a Scottish adventure.

The eight guest suites are all individually decorated, each with a character all of its own, and each comfortably large enough to play host to convivial evening meals. Some accommodate four guests, others two, and dining capacities in each suite vary from as few as four to as many as ten guests. Choose your suite when you call. All suites have large private sitting rooms with period features, most enjoy an open fire while others have a baby grand piano or private terraces with hot tubs.

Glencoe House offers seasonal menus using locally sourced ingredients. In the Glencoe House Suites all meals are served at your full-sized dining table: breakfast is a full Scottish feast while evening meals present five-course menus by candle-light, the fine dining experience with views of the loch rather than any other diners. And every suite has a maxi bar stocked with the finest malt whisky, wines and champagnes, leaving guests free to relax in style.

The Bell Tower Suites

This is not self-catering. It is Glencoe House self-catering

The six Bell Tower Suites offer something slightly different: self-catering accommodation but only just. The breakfast of your choice is provided in your fridge and there's an Aga for you to cook it on. This leaves you free to start the day with a daily paper - and get dressed when and if you choose - though you can also opt for breakfast in the Great Hall. The same flexibility goes for evening meals: gourmet pre-prepared dishes are ready in the freezer or you can dine out in style in Glencoe House's Great Hall.

All suites are fitted out with the facilities rarely found in any rental property. All have wood-burning stoves for warmth and Aga stoves for cooking. Crockery is Villeroy and Boch, the fridge is stocked with all the ingredients for your chosen breakfast and a freezer is packed with gourmet meals to graze. There's no need to wash up or set your fire: rooms are serviced daily. Unlike most self-catering properties, here you can stay for just one night or as long as you like.

The Bell Tower Suites comprise, on the ground floor, a comfortable sitting room, fully stocked kitchen, luxurious bathroom with separate shower. The bedroom, with en-suite, is on a mezzanine first floor. Each accommodates two guests in emperor-size bed: twin beds are not available in the Bell Tower Suites, nor are extra beds. The wood-burning stoves mean the Bell Tower Suites are not suitable for children and steps at the entrance and to the mezzanine bedroom mean there's no wheelchair access. But each suite has a private deck with a hot tub, perfect for relaxing at the end of a busy day.

Your B&B Hosts

You'll get a warm welcome from Roger Niemeyer and Judy Pate here. Despite being a substantial property Glencoe House is still family-owned and run; the experience remains truly individual and personal. There are benefits to scale as the house has its own massage therapist to offer in-suite treatments and the kitchen operates on a truly professional level. Also when it is time allows you can explore the ten acres of landscaped grounds.

Glencoe is known as one of the most beautiful regions in the Highlands. Part of its charm is in its sheer remoteness, but it's easily reached by the Caledonian sleeper from Euston, or by private plane to Oban Airport, from which a taxi will take 40 minutes to bring you to Glencoe House. Driving is always the flexible - and affordable - option, and Glencoe House is 2 hours from Glasgow and 2.5 hours from Edinburgh.  For those who've moved away from fossil fuels Glencoe House has two Tesla electric charging points for residents.
