Greenhill House Luxury B&B

A touch of the 30's with great sea views

This beautiful lodge brings the elegance of the inter-war years to a spectacular setting, on a west-facing slope overlooking Lyme Bay, with breathtaking views of Golden Cap and the Jurassic Coast. Guests are greeted with tea and cakes and hospitality is of the highest standard - you don't often find Tripadvisor reviews that are all five-star.

There are just three guest bedrooms here, all with ensuite facilities including, in one case, a roll-top bath with wonderful sea views and in another a private balcony. The decor reflects the 1930's theme but adds some very current comforts, including fine linens and luxury toiletries. King sized beds are supremely comfortable and all rooms share spectacular sea views.

There's a spacious sitting room for guests' exclusive use, complete with a grand piano, a selection of books and maps of the area and a range of board games. There's also a lovely dining room with sea views where breakfast is served, though when the weather is right the meal can be taken on the terrace. The garden is a particular delight, with 1930's wicker sun loungers and Greenhill Croquet can be played amongst the banks and trees.

there is a certain sort of genius to the art of looking after guests and in 40 years of travelling together we have never felt more at home. This place has my highest recommendation

Your B&B Hosts

Your hosts here are Ed and Sara Hollway, and guests are united in their praise. Ed usually prepares the breakfasts, using ingredients from local farms and including extra touches, such as truffle oil on field mushrooms. A speciality is a Greenhouse smoothie - and it is actually green. Sara, it appears, does everything else, including serving tea and cake on arrival and even, whenever possible, shuttling guests to and from their town centre restaurants in the evenings.

Location

Greenhill House is set just above Lyme Regis. It's a few minutes drive to the Cobb and harbour, a journey that takes 15 minutes on foot (it takes 20 minutes back. There is a bus). Though Lyme Regis is a relatively small seaside town it has a wealth of character shops and far more good restaurants than it has any right to expect: just ask Ed and Sara for their personal recommendations. The town itself is at the heart of Dorset's Jurassic Coast, with miles of glorious beaches under crumbling, fossil-filled cliffs. The closest train station is at Axminster, from where there is a bus, though a taxi takes just 15 minutes.
