Ibthorpe House

A Jane-Austen welcome in a house she knew well

Ibthorpe House isn't just in Austen country; it's a house in which she stayed often, visiting her friends Martha and Mary Lloyd. Friends became relatives when Jane Austen's brother James married Mary Lloyd at the local Hurstbourne Tarrant church.

Even now Ibthorpe House is a calm and welcoming place, an effortlessly casual rural oasis with a small walled garden and wonderful views. There are ponies, a dog, a cat and chickens, much as in Victorian times, and it's a wonderful place to relax in the heart of the Hampshire countryside.

Guests here have the full use of a self-contained garden suite. Accommodation is in a bedroom fitted with a king-sized double as well as a bunk bed, thus offering the ultimate flexibility. There's a separate living/dining area for relaxing in the evenings and being set apart in the garden means guests are truly able to relax in peace.

Breakfast here is not a standard Wolsey Lodge breakfast. Rather than offering a classic full English Ibthorpe House provides just a simple continental breakfast, provided in your guest suite to be enjoyed in peace. They are firm believers in natural ingredients that often come fresh from the garden, and always have a range of non-dairy milks available to go with their selection of high-end teas and coffees. And if you want a cooked breakfast the pub along the road will be only too happy to oblige.

Your B&B Hosts

Your hosts here are Sarah and James Basden, their children, several ponies, one dog, one cat and some chickens. This makes the garden apartment the perfect place to maintain a somewhat distant view of a busy family life.

Set in the heart of Southern England between Andover and Newbury, Ibthorpe House is conveniently located for many attractions, including Stonehenge, Highclere Castle and more. For visitors from abroad Heathrow Airport is an hour's drive. For cooked breakfasts and other meals the village pub provides excellent fare.
