Kilmokea Country Manor & Garden

A Georgian manor house in seven glorious acres

Beautifully set in rural County Wexford, Kilmokea is a tranquil refuge for all the senses. Rooms are wonderfully designed with antiques and fine fabrics, the resident chef provides organic meals through the day, and there's even a spa. Add in one of Ireland's finest gardens, mixing formal areas with open woodlands, and you have the ideal destination B&B, more than just a base from which to explore but truly a great place to be.

There are six guest bedrooms at Kilmokea, each individually designed and furnished to make the most of the property's period features but ensure that every comfort is amply provided. Each is named after some of the more sensational plants and animals that you'll find in the gardens outside, and two of the rooms, set on the ground floor, have their own private front doors giving immediate garden access. All, of course, are en-suite. For wifi head to the library.

Kilmokea has plenty going on throughout the day. Guests here can relax in the indoor heated pool, enjoy sessions in the sauna and Jacuzzi, or undertake aromatherapy treatments. Apart from breakfast a la carte lunches are served in the conservatory while table d'hote dinners - with vegetables plucked fresh from the garden - are served by arrangement in the dining room. There's even a baby grand piano for the musically inclined. And at any time of year the seven acres of beautifully tended gardens provide a riot of colour and plenty to see. The more active will soon find the all-weather tennis court, croquet lawn and trout lake. This is far more than just a place to sleep.

There are two self-catering units at Kilmokea, converted from a granary and coach house and retaining beamed ceilings, crafted stone work and original windows. The beautiful furnishings and excellent facilities are only part of their appeal. More importantly, guests in the self-catering units have free access to all the B&B's main facilities: the seven-acre gardens, the indoor heated swimming pool, the tennis court, croquet lawn and more. Add on the options of taking aromatherapy treatments and the occasional meal in the conservatory or dining room and you really have the best of both worlds.

The Garden Suite has been converted from the original Granary and is an attractive two-bedroom first-floor apartment, with a large rose window giving views of the Italianate Gardens. There is a drawing room with a high beamed ceiling, a fully-equipped kitchen/diner and two separate bedrooms, each with their own ensuite shower rooms.

The Coach House offers unusually flexible accommodation: It can either cater for four guests by using just the Orchard bedroom or up to eight by adding on two further bedrooms, the Orchard Room and the Tulip Suite. Whichever you choose, the bedrooms are on the first floor, while downstairs you have use of a large drawing room/kitchen with a vaulted ceiling and Minstrell's Gallery: a character setting for relaxing by the fire.

Your B&B Hosts

Your hosts at Kilmokea are the Hewlett family, who have spent the last 20 years restoring the property to its former glory and who welcome guests because they like looking after people. Emma and Mark have three boys. Joshua is your waiter in the evening and Myles & Cosmo  help below stairs. Several animals, including a retired horse live here, the hens providing eggs for breakfast. They have spent a lot of effort restoring the gardens - think an Irish Heligan with giant rhubarb, tree ferns and bamboo - in particular restoring the vegetable garden into a fully organic fruit and vegetable potager, providing super-fresh ingredients direct to the plate.

Much of the pleasures are found within the grounds, elegantly tumbling down to the River Barrow. But take time to explore. South Wexford is 'secret Ireland' - largely unspoilt and awaiting discovery. The coastline offers a beach a day for a fortnight, with pretty villages, bird-filled mudflats, surf beaches and pretty fishing villages all within easy reach. There are 11 golf courses within an hours drive, with the closest being 10 minutes away, fily fishing on rivers and more angling to sea, kite-surfing, kayaking, and history on every side. Best of all are the people: warm, friendly, interesting and philosophical - and always with time for a chat.
