Roundwood House

An elegant Georgian manor house in rural Co. Laois

Set at the foot of the Slieve Bloom Mountains, just over an hour from Dublin, Roundwood House is surrounded by mature trees, lawns, gardens and delightful, extensive outbuildings. It is a historic home of architectural interest and was once described by Desmond Guinness, co-founder of the Irish Georgian Society, as having a “marvellous doll’s house-like quality”.

A rambling avenue leads you through a welcoming committee of animals and into a bright, spacious hall. There is a drawing room, study and dining room, where the combination of log fires, antique furniture and absence of televisions may actually make you believe you’ve been transported back to the 18th century.

The six bedrooms in the Main House are all en-suite, spacious and unique. They contain their original architectural features, have gracious views of the lawns and courtyards and promise to give you one of the best night’s sleep you’ll know. The four bedrooms in the Yellow House (not a modern annex but the original house built by Anthony Sharp, whose grandson subsequently built the Main House) are en-suite, quaint and comfortable. They each have views of a beautiful walled garden.

Catch a moment for reflection in the old Coach House, where Hannah's father amassed a 2,000-volume 'Library of Civilization', with books that each give something new and beautiful; a poem, a philosophy, a scientific theory, a painting, a symphony, a new kind of politics or technology. Alternatively Roundwood House is surrounded by 18 acres of grounds, so many a happy hour can be spent meeting the resident chickens, ducks and guinea pigs, or borrowing a dog to head out for a walk.

When you stay at Roundwood, you travel in time, to a place where you felt free of stress, free of pressure, free of demands, with nothing to concern you other than what volume to pluck from the library shelf, and what gin to choose for a drink, and what wine to choose to match with Paddy’s excellent cooking at dinner…

Your B&B Hosts

Your hosts here are Hannah and Paddy Flynn, who took over Roundwood House from Hannah's parents. They are attentive but relaxed hosts who make every guest feel at home. Everything is made in-house, from the flapjacks that welcome new arrivals to the crackers served with the cheese course at the end of a gourmet dinner. Paddy is an outstanding cook, and their four-course evening meals are the stuff of legend. Ingredients are locally-sourced, with plenty of local lamb and beef, but vegetarians and other dietary requirements can always be accommodated. Paddy is also a great sommelier, so the experience is warmed by an enthusiastically curated selection of fine wines.

Location

Roundwood House is set in the North West of County Laois. This is a beautifully unspoiled part of Eire; despite being only three miles from the town of Mountrath the 18 acres of sprawling gardens make it feel beautifully rural and unspoiled. If you decide to venture out into the surrounding countryside there is no shortage of things to see and do. The Slieve Bloom is the oldest mountain range in Europe and from the top on a clear day you can see the high points of the four ancient provinces of Ireland. The area is picturesque, unspoiled and peaceful - a delight for hikers and cyclists of all abilities. Horse-riding, mountain-biking, fishing and golf are available locally, while for groups foraging, yoga and guided mountain walks can be arranged with notice. For travellers from the UK the drive to Roundwood House from Dublin Airport takes just over an hour.
