South Park Farm Barn

Sustainable haven on the Hampshire/Wiltshire border

Set amongst woodland and wildflower meadows, South Park Farm Barn is a design triumph of wood, steel, glass and brick. Built over a three-year period by the current owners, it is a new eco-friendly property that retains the charm of its original structure but adds the latest technology to tread lightly on the environment. The obvious results are bright and airy interiors, with huge windows and vaulted timber-beamed ceilings, best enjoyed, perhaps, from the first-floor sunset gallery, with glorious views to the west. There's far more you don't see - the air source underfloor heating and a mechanically ventilated heat recovery system, natural insulation, LED lighting and a limecrete foundation. None of this really affects your visit, which is just comfortable and welcoming.

The central porch is where breakfast is served, opening on to banks of wildflowers when the season is right. In a building designed to blend with the environment it's the surroundings that make your stay blissfull

There are two guest bedrooms. One is a double and has an ensuite bathroom while the other can be configured as either a king-size or a twin. This has a private bathroom and towelling gowns are provided to get you across the corridor. Both bathrooms have travertine tiles, waterfall showers and full-length baths. Both rooms are well-equipped, with comfortable beds, hospitality trays and large TVs with Sky subscription. Naturally there is wifi throughout.

Breakfasts use locally-sourced, super-fresh ingredients: both the time it is served and the breakfast itself can be agreed the previous night. Evening meals can also be provided but only by arrangement. Guests here are free to enjoy the space. There's a sitting area on the first floor and the grounds are delightfully wild. Downstairs you're likely to have the company of South Park Farm Barn's five golden retrievers. Many guests return just to meet the dogs as they are super-friendly but they do quieten down if ignored.

Your B&B Hosts

Ian and Casie spent three years building South Park Farm Barn and rewilding its three cradling acres, and will happily tell guests how environmental targets have been met. More importantly they're full of information about what to do and see in the area, and can explain things in French or German if required. They're fabulous cooks as you'll discover at breakfast and occasionally, by arrangement, evening meals. Be aware you'll be sharing the house with five large retrievers: most guests find them a delight.

South Park Farm Barn is a couple of minutes from the A303, so super-convenient as a stopover, but there's plenty to keep you occupied over a longer stay. Andover is the nearest town but Salisbury - with Old Sarum and its Cathedral - is 20 minutes away and the stone circles at Stonehenge and Avebury are both within a half-hour drive, A selection of Ordnance Survey maps make it easy to walk or cycle: marked paths in the area include the Ridgeway, the Wayfarers Way, the Test Way and the Wansdyke Path. Thruxton is three miles away and there are several small airfiields in the area that will give you the chance to go up in planes and sometimes jump out of them.
