Temple House

A luxury Georgian Country House in a thousand Irish acres

Reached by a half-mile avenue threading through parkland grazed by 1,600 sheep and their lambs, this is a classic stately manor in the heart of County Sligo. Home to the Perceval family since 1665 it effortlessly blends grandeur with intimacy in a stunning rural setting. It's a wonderful place to get together for a private event or a romantic getaway, an unequalled chance to experience of life on a grand estate.

Accommodation is in six guest bedrooms, offering spacious, light-filled rooms. Beds are comfortable, furniture of the period and bathrooms well-equipped, but there's nothing twee about Temple House: the atmosphere is authentically that of a grand rural manor house, firmly planted in its own thousand acres of parkland and grazing.

Guests here rattle around the public areas with plenty of space and rooms to spare. The central hallway is vast, with a grand staircase cradling the space. There are breakfast rooms, morning rooms, drawing rooms and a grand dining hall, heated in winter by a crackling open fire. Ancestors line the walls and history is almost tangible here - you can feel the ages breathing in the stone.

Character accommodation amidst forest and sheep

Seize this opportunity to enjoy the fascinating grounds of this stately mansion economically and peacefully by renting Gardener's Cottage in the grounds. Sleeping up to eight guests it's perfect as spillover accommodation for large groups celebrating major events in the manor house, or a tranquil refuge for families on holiday. The grounds are at your door, with their Norman ruined castle and the lake with its boathouse and fishing opportunities.

Accommodation is in four small bedrooms, cosy little rooms that are ideal for unstressed nights. There are two bathrooms, offering the choice of bathtub or shower, and plenty of facilities for a family holiday.

The light and airy kitchen is fully-equipped for every catering need - though you're always free to head over to the main house to dine if you feel like a taste of luxury. There's also a comfortable sitting room with TV, rapidly warmed by the wood-stove at its heart.

Your B&B Hosts

Your hosts here are Roderick and Helena Perceval, who welcome guests into what has been their family home for the last 350 years. They manage the estate and the house and are always on hand to ensure guests are relaxed and at ease. Breakfasts are delicious, using fresh locally-sourced ingredients. Dinners at Temple House are something of an occasion. Gather in the Morning Room for pre-dinner drinks, meet fellow guests and select the wine to match your meal. You dine together seated at the large mahogany table. The four-course meals match any fine dining you'll find in Ireland - or beyond - and are followed by petits fours and coffee by the fire in the morning room.

Location

Though completely rural, Temple House is actually quite easy to get to: Knock, Ireland West Airport is half an hour away by car. The grounds themselves form a huge part of any visit here. Today's Temple House was built well above the shores of a lake - where boats are available and there are pike to catch - and as you walk down to the water you pass the ruins of previous dwellings and the 13th century ruins of a Knights Templar castle. The current Temple House dates back to 1864 thanks to a fortune earned from the East by an early Perceval, known as 'the Chinaman'. There's also the chance to roam across lush green pasture and through native woodland festooned with lichen. Sligo town is an easy 20 minutes drive away with plenty of small shops and restaurants rapidly improving as part of the Sligo Food Trail.
