The Cloudesley

Spa treatments and therapies at this holistic south-coast retreat

Stylish and contemporary, this haven hides in clear view, in the coastal town of St Leonards. The Cloudesley is a B&B unlike any other. In part it's the ethos: the food is organic and locally grown, there are no microwaves and only Himalayan crystal salt is used in food preparation. It's a place to heal the body and mind: holistic therapies on offer here, carried out in the comfort of your room or in a dedicated therapy suite. The choice of treatments offered by specialist therapists includes Reiki, reflexology, shiatsu, Swedish, deep tissue, aromatherapy, Thai hot compress and hot stone massages.

Rooms are named after Persian poets, with an assortment of books on art, gardening and other subjects on offer. There are no televisions. There's wifi thoughout but the philosophy here is that life is calmer without the relentless blare of the oblong screen.

Comforts are extreme. Beds are hand-made pocket spring in all-natural fibres or luxury orthopedic, with pillows of Siberian goose down. Beds are king size, though two rooms can be converted into twins for a small surcharge. Walls are painted in Eco-Limewash, free of the harsh chemicals used in conventional paints, and the shampoos in the en-suite bathrooms - where the showers are heated by solar power - are all certified free of parabens and sodium lauryl sulphate.

You're not confined to your bedroom here. There are, of course, the two dedicated therapy rooms, but also a range of drawing rooms, beautifully decorated to soothe and inspire. Despite your host's Chelsea Flower fame the Japanese-themed garden is something of a work in progress, but it's progress you can already appreciate. It is already home to some incredibly rare rhododendron, fir and bamboo species and provides a further terrace for guests and many of the fruits and berries for the breakfast table.

Your B&B Hosts

Your host here is Shahriar Mazandi, a Chelsea Flower Show gold medal winner, former fencing champion, bamboo specialist, artist, photographer, Reiki Master and holistic therapist who graduated top student of his year. Special diets are fully catered for at breakfast and, somewhat unusually, guests are welcome to invite friends to share breakfast if required. The atmosphere is friendly and serene, contemporary and stylish, a cultural outpost on the East Sussex coast.

Location

The Cloudesley is a seven minute walk from St Leonards Warrior Square train station, reached in less than two hours from London by train or car (unless your satnav routes you through Croydon). There is street parking available outside which is unrestricted. Hastings Beach is about fifteen minutes walk away. Local attractions include stunning walks through woodland and sea views to the beach at Fairlight on the other side of Hastings, Great Dixter; one of the most romantic and charming small gardens in England, Bodiam Castle, of Monty Python fame, Rudyard Kipling's house Batemans, Battle Abbey and further castles at Herstmonceux and Pevensy.
