The Malabar

A scent of spice in the Yorkshire Dales

It just feels wrong to call The Malabar a barn, even if it is a listed barn that's been around for 300 years. Because in 2015 the present owners transformed it into a beautiful country guest house with six guest bedrooms, lavishly laid out with soaring beams, flagstone floors and glorious views. Despite being minutes from the M6 it is beautifully rural, on the Lake District side of the Yorkshire Dales. The Malabar improves on its ideal location with tea and scones on arrival, seasonal dinner menus, freshly-brewed morning teas and fantastic breakfasts. Your hosts lived for years in India, and bring touches of the Orient, with curry feasts on Friday nights, massage and beauty treatments by arrangement, occasional yoga retreats and lassi served at breakfast.

There are six guest bedrooms here, designed with comfort in mind, sumptuously furnished with Herdwick wool carpets, pure wool bedding and luxurious beds ranging in size from double to twin and superking, Most rooms have plenty of space for a cot, and there is also a family room sleeping five, that is also the dog-friendly room. Every room is en-suite, and fluffy bathrobes are provided to help you make the most of the freestanding rolltop baths, walk-in monsoon showers and Bath House toiletries. If required your rooms can also be the setting for a range of beauty or massage treatments: just call ahead to see what is available.

The hospitality starts as soon as you arrive, with scones served as a welcome and a selection of 12 loose leaf teas to choose from. There's a lovely sitting room and beautiful garden, and well-stocked honesty bar to help you relax. From spring until winter seasonal menus are served five days a week, but every day breakfasts are superb.

A completely lovely hideaway

Your B&B Hosts

Your hosts here have a colourful background. Graham grew up in Kerala to two generations of tea planters and followed a career in India and the Far East. Fiona has hospitality in her blood, having grown up in a succession of top hotels managed by her father, going on to work for the Straits Times, Agence France Press and CNN Asia. Even their two pointer dogs have something of a background, being rescued when left to starve by gun dog breeders in Cyprus  Your hosts live in the main farmhouse opposite, with their two children, dogs, one cat and some chickens. Though they treat The Malabar as an extension to the farmhouse, this is close enough to look after guests but does allow space.

Location

The Malabar is conveniently set just minutes away from junction 37 of the M6, ideal as a stop on a journey to or from Scotland but its immediate surroundings are known as the UK's most beautiful. On one side are the Yorkshire Dales and on the other is the Lake District. The historic market town of Sedburgh is two miles from The Malabar and has a range of independent shops and pubs. And though the area is best known for its natural beauty there is plenty else to see and do, including Farfield Mill, The Wensleydale Creamery, Skipton Castle and Bolton Abbey. There's also plenty to explore at The Malabar itself. The property is set in eight acres of field and farmland bordering the River Lune, with tree swings, viewpoints and walks from your door. If coming by train the nearest station is nine miles away at Oxenholme, from where Euston is three hours, Manchester one, or Glasgow and Edinburgh two. Call ahead and we will book a taxi. Arriving on foot the Dales Way Path runs through The Malabar's field.
