The Old Rectory, Burnham Deepdale

The finest house on the Norfolk coast

Built in the time of Mad King George, this fantastic mansion is set on four acres of landscaped grounds and is just about as close as you can get to the coast: at high tide a good golf swing will reach the sea. It's a very short walk to explore the marshes and tidal flats, with their seals and seabirds, but there is plenty to do without leaving the property, with a tennis court and a seriously large heated swimming pool. There aren't that many substantial period properties in this part of England so the Old Rectory is quite exceptional.

There are six guest bedrooms here, all spacious, beautifully furnished and equipped. Your choice of rooms gives you a selection of beds, including double, king and superking, so it's easy to find something to suit your needs. Four of the guest bedrooms are in the main house; three are en-suite while one has a private bathroom. The remaining two bedrooms are slightly differently laid out, comprising a bedroom with a 6"4 sleigh bed, a bathroom and two separate living rooms, one of which is often furnished with sofabeds for teenagers. This arrangement proves popular with families with older children, but also couples in search of a bit of extra privacy.

Breakfast is en famille around a large dining table, and there are plenty of large, uncluttered public areas in which to relax. Open fires and wood stoves make it cosy in winter, while in the summer months the gardens take centre stage. The Old Rectory sits in four and a half acres of grounds, landscaped into outdoor 'rooms' with stunning views over the coastal marshes. Add in a heated swimming pool and a tennis court and you'll always find plenty to do.

Your B&B Hosts

Your host here is Michael Dudley, a former investment banker and hedge fund manager, who is relatively new to the world of B&B. He's a sociable host, however, and is keen to see new guests breathe life into what is probably the most substantial period home on the Norfolk coast.

The Old Rectory is set on the Norfolk coast, just by the Norman church of Burnham Deepdale in the heart of the Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It's just two minutes walk across the marshes to the sea, which is famous for producing the finest mussels in the UK. Burnham Deepdale merges with Brancaster Staithe, which has a natural harbour, always busy in summer with sailing boats, and the nearest swimming beach. Fakenham is 30 minutes away by car; King's Lynn 40.
