Woodlands Retreat

Rural Scandic-style eco-refuge in the heart of Staffordshire

Just half an hour north of Birmingham, this soothingly stylish getaway is a world removed from city pressures. Eco-friendly ground source heat pumps and photovoltaic panels power the underfloor heating and electrical systems. The decor is uncluttered and elegant and vast picture windows fill each room with light. Truly a relaxing and peaceful place to escape the relentless demands of everyday life.

There are just three guest bedrooms: two master bedrooms (1 double and 1 triple) plus a standard size double. All have en-suite facilities with bathrobes and designer toiletries provided. Smart TV’s and refreshment trays complete your enjoyment. High quality bed linen, towels and furnishings provide elegant comforts with considerable style. There is, of course, free super fast wifi broadband connection throughout.

Guests aren’t confined to their rooms. The open plan ground floor has a spacious reception hall with a welcoming woodburning stove, a comfortable sitting-room and a pleasant dining room which overlooks the long flower border. Breakfast is served here or on the deck in warmer weather. Large picture windows afford spreading views over the surrounding gardens - a kaleidoscope of colour and form and a haven for bees and butterflies. These unique and spacious surroundings offer the perfect environment in which to relax and unwind - the ultimate retreat.

Your B&B Hosts

Your b&b host is Diana Shaw, an enthusiastic and versatile cook, who conjures hearty breakfasts from the very freshest, locally sourced ingredients. Most dietary prefereces can be catered for, including vegan, vegetarian and low calorie, with meals served in the dining room or on the sundeck, weather permitting. Diana stays busy looking after the garden, which includes a large wildlife pond: for health and safety reasons only children over 12 are accepted.

Woodlands Retreat is set in its own secluded woodlands with a private gate leading on to a network of paths and bridleways that thread through the adjoining Dunstall Estate, offering endless opportunities for rural walks, hacking or bike-rides. Here the setting is highly rural; its birdsong you hear, not traffic. The village too is within easy walking distance, giving you an interesting choice of pubs, and restaurants and individual shops. Further opportunities for exercise are offered at Cannock Chase, Croxall Lakes, Rosliston Forestry Reserve and Branston Water Park, all within easy reach, as is the long distance footpath of the Staffordshire Way. The much lauded National Memorial Arboretum is just 10 minutes drive along the A38. A visit here is a meaningful and moving experience that can easily take up a whole day of your time.

Local attractions include the Snowdome, Drayton Manor and Alton Towers theme parks, or for a touch of culture, the Stafford Gatehouse theatre, Lichfield Garrick and Derby Playhouse are all within easy reach. There are good reasons why Staffordshire is known as the ‘creative county’!
